Watford were poor in the second division during the 1970-71 season as they only managed to reach 18th place in the league. They stumbled out of the FA Cup in the forth round, losing 2-1 to Oxford.
The 1971-72 season proved to be a debacle for the Hornets, they stumbled in the second division, finishing the season in 22nd position, enough to relegate them to them to the third tier of English football. Their poor league form resulted in awful FA Cup form as they were embarrassingly thumped 4-1 against Notts County in the third round. The following season saw everything go from bad to worse for Watford, they lost in the first round of the league cup against Leyton Orient and they were awful in the third division, reaching 7th position by the end of the season, in turn denying them an immediate return to the second division.

They were also awful in the domestic cup competitions, losing 5-1 to Crystal palace in the league cup first round and they also crashed out of the first round in the FA Cup, losing to Colchester.
