Watford were very average in the third division during the 1965-66 season, finishing off in 12th position. Their FA Cup campaign was far from impressive as they stumbled out losing 2-1 to Southend. The following season saw little improvement for the Hornets in the cup as they once again reached the second round, losing this time to the mighty Liverpool. They had a great run in the league, narrowly missing out on promotion, finishing in third place in the third division. The 1967-68 season provided stability for Watford as they managed to reach sixth and they reached the third round of the FA Cup, losing to Sheffield United. Watford enjoyed the 1968-69 season as it was a fine success as they topped the third division by the end of the season, in turn resulting in automatic promotion to the second division. They also reached the forth round of the FA Cup, however Man United beat the hornets 2-0.
Watford’s first season in the second division was far from great, they reached a lowly 19th position in the second division, just avoiding relegation. However they embarked on a great run in the FA Cup as they progressed to the semi finals, meeting Chelsea. They lost the semi final encounter at White Hart lane, 5-1.
