Watford’s FA Cup campaign did not really set off as they stumbled out of the competition in the third round, losing to Rotherham. They stumbled out of the league cup early on, suffering a 5-2 defeat against Derby County. The hornets league campaign was a success, they finished in a credible third position, narrowly missing out on promotion. The 61-62 season saw the hornets fair much worse in the third division, they were poor in the league and finished towards the bottom end of the table, 17th position. They crashed out in the third round of the League cup, losing 3-2 against York City.

The 1963-64 season witnessed a vast improvement by Watford, their football was played with flair and skill and it came to no surprise that they finished the season off in third place in the league, narrowly missing out on promotion. They did suffer a humiliating FA Cup defeat losing to Newport in the second round.
Watford had a decent run in the 64-65 season, finishing in a respectable ninth place in the third division.
